Why we are doing things like we do?
Hello friends, another great weekend came. I been thinking about why we are procrastinating the things, usually the good things that we know we should do. Some thing that we know it is right and we should do it. But we are just putting it off for another time. What is the driving force that make us do that? I want to know. Thus I was searching for an answer. At last God has made be understood the real the fact behind this.
I was reading one of my favorite books, and there the author describing about two factors that drive us in almost everything we do consciously or unconsciously. They are PAIN and PLEASURE. The reason behind we don't do something we know we should do, because at some level we believe that taking action in this moment would be more painful than just putting it off. It seems really simple and we all know this fact up to a level. But we didn't think about this in the real way that make this helps us to achieve a solution for a lot of problems that we are facing. Once we understand this simple principle, we will get to know the reason of why we are doing things like we do. That makes us able to change things for good. Right? In my case it was an eye opener. What happen when a situation came that we felt pressure to just do it, we changed what we linked pain and pleasure to. Suddenly not taking action became more painful than just putting it off. How strange? This is how we are doing things even we are not aware about. What if we purposefully change the linking at the right time about the things that we should do? Oh My God!!! That will make an immense change in the course of our life.
The bible says about this is the root of all the emotions that we possess. 4 Maccabees 1:21-31 says,
"The emotions of both pleasure and pain have many consequences.
Thus desire precedes pleasure and delight follows it. Fear precedes pain and sorrow comes after. Anger, as a man will see if he reflects on this experience, is an emotion embracing pleasure and pain. In pleasure there exists even a malevolent tendency, which is the most complex of all the emotions. In the soul it is boastfulness, covetousness, thirst for honor, rivalry, and malice;
in the body, indiscriminate eating, gluttony, and solitary gormandizing. Just as pleasure and pain are two plants growing from the body and the soul, so there are many offshoots of these plants,
each of which the master cultivator, reason, weeds and prunes and
ties up and waters and thoroughly irrigates, and so tames the jungle of
habits and emotions. For reason is the guide of the virtues, but over the emotions it is
sovereign. Observe now first of all that rational judgment is sovereign
over the emotions by virtue of the restraining power of self-control. Self-control, then, is dominance over the desires."
